Maylee is a dynamic and multi-faceted artist, based in Toronto. Her creativity derives its inspiration from a wide range of artistic disciplines: songwriting, production, film, performance art, and design. Maylee’s music combines organic and electronic forms, including elements of boogie, bossa, space funk, psychedelia and soul. She’s shared the stage with the likes of Janelle Monae, Lee Fields, Aloe Blacc, Little Dragon, and The Budos Band, just to name a few. Before tonight’s live music, we had a chunk of time aside to recognize the person who inspired the Hamilton Independent Media Awards - the one and only Maggie Hughes.
Friends and colleagues, including Amanda Stewart, Matt Jelly, James Tenant, Kevin MacKay and Mike Hampson, just to name a few, shared a portrait of a woman who was unfailing in the face of her illness.
Maggie’s legacy is one of a strong independent journalist who never quit reporting on topics like worker’s rights, issues concerning poverty and the environment. She was well loved and respected.
She maybe never knew what impact she carried, but so many people did - and that’s what the awards will be about next spring, recognizing our independent journalists for all their contributions to the community. Without independent media we would not be a healthy society. We need different voices.
Speaking of voices, we had a lineup of musicians who were also passionate about the work Maggie was doing, and gave us all a concert after the reception. Big thanks to

The reception at the Hamilton Independent Media awards has been wonderful, with friends and colleagues of Maggie Hughes taking the stage to discuss not only her spirit, but the impact she has made on independent reporting in our city. Kevin MacKaygave a talk about independent journalism, pointing out the global potential to communicate public opinion thanks to the new and changing face of journalism. Matt Jelly reflected on his memory about Maggie Hughes and what her legacy means to local independent journalism. And Mike Hampson remembered how Maggie was always wanting to share, and bring the community together in the spirit of information sharing.
Tonight we are celebrating at the reception for the launch of the Hamilton Independent Media Awards, also known as “The Maggie’s” in honour of accomplished independent journalist, Maggie Hughes. The evening begins at 8pm and we are excited to see you there!
After the reception portion, we will have live music by The Safety Collective, Steve Sinnicks and Raphael Keelan!
